USASTAT
RELEASE 1.0
INSTRUCTIONS
USASTAT is McS' utility that is used to make USA TODAY SPORTS
CENTER download stat files compatible with Keyboard Coach Fantasy
Football.
**** IMPORTANT NOTICE ****
Please note that the standard fantasy football download files on
the Sports Center are NOT compatible with Keyboard Coach because they
don't contain sufficiently detailed stats. Instead of the standard
fantasy football files, Keyboard Coach uses those stats provided by
the Elias Sports Bureau. To download the Elias Sports Bureau from the
Sports Center follow these steps:
Log on to the Sports Center.
Press ALT-F5 to activate the pulldown menus.
Under DISK OPTIONS select NEW FILE and name your download file
(we use file names that reflect the week such as week3.cap).
While you are still under DISK options select TURN CAPTURE ON.
From the main menu select #3 STATS & BOXES BY SPORT.
Next select #1 FOOTBALL
Next select #5 NFL STATS & STANDINGS
Next select #2 ALL TEAMS STATS THRU (date)
After viewing all 28 NFL teams stat files select ALT-F5, go
to disk and TURN CAPTURE OFF.
Type OFF to exit the Sports Center.
RUNNING USASTAT
USASTAT will run from either your Keyboard Coach startup
drive/directory or from the drive/directory that contains your team
files (in some cases the startup directory and the data directory will
be the same).
Copy the file USASTAT .EXE from the distribution diskette to either
of the above directories.
To start the program log to either your data or startup directory and
type the command USASTAT .
USASTAT INSTRUCTIONS
PAGE 2
The first screen will ask you for the name and location of the
download file. If the download file has been copied to the current
directory you will just need to type the file name that you selected
during your Sports Center session. If your download file is located
in another drive or directory, add the drive letter and directory
name to the file name. EXAMPLE C:\USA\WEEK3.CAP.
As soon as USASTAT finds your download file it will begin
processing your player files. You will notice that the Elias Sports
Bureau files list players in the format LAST NAME,FIRST INITIAL in
most cases. In some cases more than one letter is used for the first
name (example: Kelly,Ji). In order to match the Sports Center's files
as closely as possible, USASTAT takes your player names and
temporarily turns them into the format LAST NAME,FIRST NAME. If the
program is able to find a match for the last name, it then begins a
first to last character match in an effort to match the Sports Center's
version of the name.
When the program has completed it will print a list of players who
were not updated so that you can check for possible spelling or name
format errors. (Please note that some players will not be updated
simply because they didn't have any stats on file).
USING THE EDITOR
If your problem list includes players who had stats listed in the
Sports Center files, make sure the player is on the correct NFL team
and then compare your spelling of his name to the download file's
spelling. Corrections can be made using the EDIT PLAYER option. You
should still enter the player's name FIRSTNAME LASTNAME but use a
format that will match the way his name is listed in the Sports Center
files when it is reversed as above.
EXAMPLE:
Your file had the player listed as John Jackson and he was not
updated because the Sports Center used Jackson,JD. Use the editor
to change the name to JD JACKSON.
Remember that this player's stats will also need to be edited also.
DO NOT RUN THE UPDATE AGAIN TO BRING CORRECTED PLAYERS UP TO DATE.
THIS WILL CORRUPT YOUR OTHER PLAYERS' DATA.
When using the editor you will be prompted for a search string. This
may be any part of the player's name or any part of the name. The
search is not upper case/lower case sensitive so you do not need to
worry about capitalization. The program will search the entire league
for any players whose name contain the search string you specified. Each
time it finds a player it will display the name and ask if you wish to
continue the search. If the correct player is displayed answer 'NO' and
the editing screen will appear.
USASTAT INSTRUCTIONS
PAGE 3
The editing screen allows you to edit the player's name and stats.
When editing the player's name, make sure you use a format that will
allow the program to recognize the player the way his name is shown
in the download file (see example on page 2). Use the editing keys
as described on page 4 of KCF.DOC to change the name.
A player who was not updated will need to have his stats edited. AGAIN,
DO NOT RUN THE UPDATE AGAIN TO BRING CORRECTED PLAYERS UP TO DATE.
Choose EDIT STATS and a screen will appear showing all the possible
stat categories. You only need to enter stats in the appropriate
categories, you do not need to enter a zero in stats that don't apply
to this player. Use the up & down arrow keys or <ENTER> to move from
data field to data field and use the editing keys as described on page
4 of KCF.DOC to enter data. When you are finished you will be asked if
all data is correct. If you made an error, select 'NO' and you will
be returned to the top of the page. You do not need to re-enter all
data. Just press <ENTER> or down arrow until the stat you wish to
correct is highlighted and make your correction. You may then press
<ENTER> or down arrow until you reach the bottom of the page and
answer 'YES' to the correct data prompt.
